The Music Place Sydney has a wonderful Conn Chu Berry Alto sax available. Serial number 153###, 1925, with a fully functioning micro tuner neck. This stunning Conn Chu Berry is silver plated with gold wash bell. The gold wash has been scratched but is still very prominent. This stunning example has had a recent overhaul, there is nothing to spend to get it to a playable condition. All keywork is tight with a light, quick action. There is a little wear in the plating on the rear key rods and key guards but for a horn of this age we would put it at a 9/10. This Conn Chu Berry is going to fly out the door, so don't be shy, come and try her. Call 9550 0100 for an appointment.
This early 1921 model Conn vintage alto saxophone has serial number 690XX. This is an amazingly beautiful Conn New Wonder alto sax - one of the most desirable early american pro horns. There are no visible dings, dents or pings on this Conn New Wonder Alto. The pads, corks and felts are new and in keeping with the original sound and feel of the vintage Conn alto. The sound of this New Wonder alto is glorious - words like warm, rich, mellow, jazz, big band come to mind - but add a nice amount of clarity and you will get the picture. The finish of this Conn New Wonder alto sax looks amazing - although all the engraving is very sharp and there are no visible signs of buffing, we suspect that it may have been re-lacquered at some stage. If so, the job is incredible and unless you have a magnifying glass it is very hard to tell. In any case, this is a beautiful playing horn which will give you many more decades of happy playing. The Conn New Wonder alto sax comes with it's original case which is in near perfect condition and it's brass neck plug. As a player or as a collector, you should not miss this one - it is rare to find a Conn New Wonder in this condition. Check it out at The Music Place Melbourne now, or if you are in Sydney, we can organise for you to try it out at The Music Place Sydney. Any questions please Contact us
Serial number #257XXX is 1930 production. Beautiful hand engraved bell. There are no dings or dents evident on the body, bow or bell. the neck is in very good condition. Pearls are all in good condition and nicely "vintaged". Keywork has some pitting to the plating however the mechanism is in good condition. This horn needs an overhaul and will be a beautiful instrument when this is completed. The horn plays "as is" but will be a great player when restored. Buescher True Tones are well known for their gorgeous sweet jazz sound. The overtone series is true, accurate and easy - tuning is all good. Finished in frosted silver plate (tarnished). Buy now cheap for $1500 or fully restored (our restorers are the best in the business) for $2800 - still cheap!
Made in 1919 this very early tenor has serial number #57XXX. Nickel plated with simple and elegant engraving to the bell. Plating is 99% (plus) intact and in very nice polished condition. This sax has been freshly re-padded using white "Roo Pads" with domed metal resonators and rivets. Keywork has been tightened and is very smooth for such an old horn. The mechanism has been recorked and refelted as required. This horn does not have a front F key however you can of course play this with alternate fingerings. It does have an extra right hand G# trill key - plus an E vent key - what a bonus! This has a really warm and round sound but if you want to push it, this sax will bark! What a really lovely piece of early American sax history - and very playable. Was $2600 - Buy now $1800.
Serial M230xxx circa 1974
Up for sale is this Selmer Mk6 tenor saxophone. Serial numbered M230XXX which places manufacturing year at 1974. This is your opportunity to own one of the last of the famous Mk6 tenors made. This saxophone is a "players horn". You can see from the lacquer at @ 50% that it has had plenty of playing (the player had more than usual acidic saliva so there is less intact lacquer than you would expect for such a young horn) There is still lots of life left in this tenor. We have disassembled the keywork, bathed the horn, replaced a few pads, corks and felts and she is ready for her new owner. Comes with original brown Selmer Mk6 case. This is a "big" and "focussed" sounding Mk6 and like all other Selmer Mk6's ... is collectable and can only increase in value over time. Buy now for $8500
Special Alto with Full Pearls & Silver Neck. This horn is a re-lacquer, done many years ago and is in 99.9% pristine condition. We aquired it from a retired pro who was sad to see her go but he was past his playing days. Plays like a dream.
The famous H.N White King Company was one of the major innovators of brass and woodwind design and manufacture from the late 1800's right through to 1960's. Now for sale is one of the earlier examples of their soprano saxophones - a rare 1927 instrument with serial #99XXX. This beautiful soprano is plated with frosted silver on the body and polished silver on the keywork and bell logo area. Of course all engraving is hand worked and is very elegant. Really interesting mechanism design evidencing H.N. White's commitment to developing new concepts in instrument design. This saxophone is generally in really lovely condition and plays fine (even though you will need to use alternate high F fingerings). The tone is just as you would hope for - warm, dark, smoky etc etc etc. You will find more detailed company and King product history at http://www.hnwhite.com/ If you want to own a playable piece of the world's earlier saxophone history then
Last one we will ever have new (at a secondhand price) This was probably made in late 1990's but never sold. Finished with black body and gold keywork. Nice engraving. This is a really good beginner to intermediate model or for a "weekend warrior"
Great entry level sax - plays easily and is in good condition. lacquer is 95% intact with very minor wear marks. This horn would be a 1990's model but is in very good condition. A comfortable horn for a beginner or advancing beginner.
Beautiful handmade Italian saxophone with lovely hand engraving inside bell. Inside bell is gold plated (not lacquered) The body and keywork are silver plated. This is not secondhand - it is the only one of this model that we have had in stock and it has been on display for a while. Hence the silver plating is a little dull. We could re-polish it for you however some players really like the look of this horn as it is. This is a really nice horn for the serious player - whether it be jazz, commercial or classical.
#205XXX - European horn with a nice warm, rich sound and certainly not expensive. Amati manufactured these horns in the 1970's to 1980's and they were then sent to Steyr who finished them and put the serial number on, hence the Austria stamp. The bell brace design is the same as the 1955 Amati tenor bell brace design. We wonder if they used an older desgn/tooling for this model. The art deco designs of the key guards look very much 1950's and are very attractive. This sax has @60% lacquer intact but has loads of character. There is a slight ding in the left hand side of the body and a dent in the bow. The dent in the bell rim is an easy fix. Overall, this is a good sax for a beginner who wants a nice full sound.
Serial number #160XXX places this as late 1946 production. This is one of the most famous martin saxophone models and understandably so. This horn has beautiful and intricate hand engraving to a substantial area of the bell. As you can see in the detailed pics, the lacquer is mostly intact except for the usual pits around the fine engraving. The lacquer is a beautiful dark honey colour. The mechanism is in excellent playing condition and the pads are all in very good order also. The pearls and rollers are all intact showing only very small signs of minimal wear. There are no visible dings or dents - attesting to the fact that this sax has been used but very well cared for. This is a really gorgeous sounding vintage Martin horn - nice and dark and mellow but with plenty of projection when you push it a bit harder.
Serial Number #47XXX This tenor plays really nicely. Lacquer is @95% intact with the normal wear marks around the sling hook ring and a few scratches on the left hand side of the body. There is a small ping in the bow and a small ding in the body under the right hand thumb hook. The neck has @75% lacquer intact. The mechanism is in really great condition and the horn plays smoothly and is reliable. We are happy to place our "The Music Place" 12 month warranty on this nice saxophone.
Rare, rare, rare - late 1928 to early 1929 piece of saxophone history with a serial number of #111xx. The body has no visible dents or dings. There is no evidence of any body work having been undertaken. The left hand thumb rest has mother of pearl touch. Original silver plating overall is 80% with plating worn off the usual areas - thumb hook, palm key touches and key cup surfaces. The keywork is in excellent playing condition and is smooth and tight. This model 26, made only 7 years after Henri Selmer started making Selmer saxophones, has been fully repadded. The hand engraving is absolutely beautiful and fine - you just dont get to see this level of work on new horns. This gorgeous sax sounds and plays just as it looks - like a dream.
Made in late 1927 and the most beautiful Martin soprano we have ever seen. Serial number 86XXX finished in gold plate. Look at the pics to see the exquisite plating work - frosted and bright work plus the very fine artisan's engraving. This fine soprano was repadded recently with flat disk resonators. The tone is pure big and warm vintage Martin. This horn could be described as 99.9% or even mint. You will probably never see one like this again.
This Selmer tenor saxophone has been beautifully restored by our technicians. 1978 year of manufacture and in excellent playing condition. This Selmer Mk7 tenor sax sounds very much like a late(ish) Mk6 and is really free blowing - easy to play. Typical older Selmer tenor sax sound - warm and fuzzy at low volumes and a nice solid room filling sound when you play louder. This horn has plenty of projection and clarity at high to extreme volumes and is tonally even. Intonation is very good. You can see in the pics that lacquer has worn off in the usual places and we rate the lacquer at 70% intact. There is no evidence of any major repairs. There are a few minor pings in the bell, bow and neck - nothing that affects the playing quality at all. We have restored this Selmer mk7 tenor saxophone with white roo pads with plastic resonators. The keywork is smooth and tight as you would expect from a "The Music Place" restoratiion. The keywork has a really secure feel. This is a really nice Selmer vintage tenor saxophone - a great player! We will be happy to even place a "The Music Place" 12 month warranty on this Selmer tenor sax - so if you are looking for a Selmer Mk6 tenor saxophone but don't want to pay a crazy price - then this one is for you.
One of the first Super Action 80 tenors to be sold new in Australia. Serial number 334XXX is in the first year of production of this model - 1981. This saxophone is in amazing condition. It was played by it's one and only owner in some of the major symphony orchestras in Australia. Originally selected for it's outstanding intonation and purity of sound, this saxophone has been very carefully looked after since new. Almost mint condition - pads, corks and felts are in excellent condition. The mechanism is smooth, light and fast meeting the needs of the most technically demanding player - repertoire or jazz. This is a really beautiful saxophone from the most famous saxophone making company in history - Henri Selmer Paris. This is a "one only" instrument and you will need to be very quick if you are a serious buyer.
Early 1929 production. This alto has the beautiful tonal colours of a typical Chu Berry model, which was favoured as being the new instrument of choice by many sax players in the 1920's -1930's. It has a big and broad sound with plenty of clarity at higher volumes. This sax is finished in frosted silver plate which is 99% intact but has some small stains/tarnish.The gold wash bell is immaculate and beautiful. The Tuner - matic neck works perfectly. This may have been re-soldered at some stage. The neck cork has been replaced recently. The action is fairly light and has been repadded with Conn reso pads. The G# key is the typical nail filed/checkered pattern. All pearls and rollers are in excellent condition. There are no dents or dings. There is a small ping on the bow. The keywork is bright silver plate - 95% intact but with some tarnish. Corks, felts etc have been replaced recently. The mechanism is smooth but not over tight. Unusually, there is no plating wear on the usual places - right hand thumb hook or octave rest. The only plating wear is on the outside surfaces of the lower key guards. If you are after a beautiful old Conn in great playing condition then this one is for you.
Probably the most famous Conn tenor saxophone model of all time. Up for sale is this wonderful 1952 Conn 10M with serial number #346XXX. This horn plays absolutely beautifully. This is one of the nicest playing 10M's we have ever seen. This instrument has had a recent repad - dark orange leather pads with plastic resonators. Keywork is a little noisy but can be tightened and corks and felts replaced if required at extra cost. Original lacquer has been carefully removed - there are no buffing marks on the body, bow or bell. The keywork lacquer has all but disappeared through time. There are no dents, dings or pings that we can find. Pearls and rollers appear to be original - in very nice condition and nice cloudy patina. The right hand thumb hook has been repositioned slightly to the left of original which makes the right hand more comfortable. The neck collar has been re-soldered to the neck as has the neck brace - indicating that the neck may have been bent and straightened sometime in the past. The neck is correctly aligned indicating that this repair was done well. The octave mechanism pushrod guide has also been re-soldered to the body. Overall this is a really fantastic player - it has the big, big sound reminiscent of all Conn 10M's. And as a bonus, it has the collectable value of having been played on tour with "Sting".
