Dale Barlow Workshop Success

On the evening of Thursday 12th October, an audience of around 30 gathered in the Music Place Sydney for a free workshop and performance by one of Australia's most celebrated jazz saxophonists, Dale Barlow. This was a rare opportunity to hear Dale speak about music and the saxophone in a public setting.

Dale treated a wide audience to musings on saxophone technique, approaches to jazz improvisation and of course, some outstanding playing. Accompanied by Brendan Clarke and Dave Goodman, Dale gave renditions of Body and Soul, Eternal Triangle, St Thomas and even the Star Wars Theme, at the behest of one of our 9 year old trumpet students.

In an 80 minute presentation, Dale opened up a forum for discussion and questions. A mix of professional musicians, conservatorium, high school and primary school students asked questions on everything including scales, tone, improvisational goals and the freedom of a trio setting.

As an aside, Dale was also able to test drive the beautiful Ramponi R1 tenor saxophone. Apart from the stunning finish, (silver plated, hand engraved, and a gold wash bell) the R1 received a great playing review.

With this great experience behind us, we are now looking forward to more workshops in the pipeline, including trombonist Jeremy Borthwicka and altoist Andrew Robson.
