Fiona Burnett - Soprano saxophone specialist, performing with “Fiona Burnett Quartet” & “Morgana”
The development of the technical facility on one’s instrument is of utmost importance to the professional musician and serious student. In the case of my chosen instrument - soprano saxophone, I have spent considerable time on this aspect of playing. The notion of being able to play fast is very appealing to many students, but one must be able to use this fast playing in a musical way. To attain such technique students must practise consistently and methodically with a metronome.

To be able to play fast and gain control over the instrument the student must begin by practicing slowly and steadily. The metronome must be used at all times to ensure that you are always playing in time - it’s too easy to “drift off” in respect to the time if the metronome is not used. Scales, arpeggios and other technical exercises and patterns should be practised in this manner. Start slowly and as your technical technique improves gradually increase the tempo. Arpeggios are excellent for developing control over intervals. All of these exercises should be practised in as many keys as possible with the intent of gradually practising them in all 12 keys.

Consistent practise is the key to the development of all aspects of all playing.

Daily practise of scales, arpeggios and other technical patterns will establish a sound foundation in the area of technique and also contribute to developing an understanding of the different keys.
