Glenn Foster with Luke Smith :: Luke started playing sax 6 years ago. His first sax was a Yamaha 32 which was a school band horn. Later In his first year of playing, he wanted to get a new saxophone of his own 'with style, elegance and sophistication and a darker sound to play jazz'. He tried many horns at The Music Place and settled on a Temby Vintage model Alto. He finds his saxophone to be very comfortable and will soon upgrade his pearl keytops to Temby's latest West Australia mother of pearl for an even closer 'in key cup feel'. Luke says 'the sound of my horn has changed and developed with my playing and provides exactly the sound that I want to achieve.' He is now in year 12 studying music 1 (performance). Luke's long term sax aim is to have fun and play in weekend bands as an outlet when he moves into a career - maybe in medicine next year? He is also a keen cricketer and plays soccer for fun. David Temby met him recently and was really impressed by his warm, rich sound, technique and musicality. His family have been regular 'Music Placers' since purchasing his Temby Vintage Alto in 2003 - for instrument servicing, reeds, accessories, advice and general sax talk etc. Scott MacKenzie - Technician :: Scott is pictured - working on tightening and repairing a vintage saxophone's keywork. Scott is one of Australia's (and international) most respected instrument technicians. He will work wonders with your instrument - whether it is a restoration, for professional playing, weekend fun, played by a student or owned by a school. Evie :: Pictured in store is Evangeline Armstrong Gordon. 'Evie' started learning to play clarinet in 2003 at the Wollomgong Conservatorium of Music. Last year (2008) she added tenor sax and flute playing to her repertoire. Evie has purchased all her instruments from The Music Place - Temby Custom Tenor Saxophone, Temby Signature Series Flute and Leblanc Noblet Clarinet, and loves playing all of them. She now plays in various groups ranging from jazz orchestra, jazz ensemble, jazz combo and more recently a classical ensemble. Evie has won gold medals at Engadine Band Music Festival, has played in numerous concerts in a wide range of public venues including the Easter Jazz Festival in Wollongong. She has also attended numerous workshops with a range of musicians and musical arrangers including some of Australia’s finest jazz instrumentalists. She has even played with James Morrison and Fred Wesley. Evie loves her music pursuits - we think her smile says it all! Jacinta Mikus :: Harrison Smith has been playing trumpet for 2 years - his teacher is Hayden Oakes at Pennant Hills Public School NSW. He started playing on his 1960's Olds Ambassador trumpet and Bach 7c mouthpiece. Harrison can play high C (leger lines) already and sometimes even high D which is a pretty good effort for such a young trumpeter. He plays in 2 bands - his school's concert band and stage band. The favourite tunes he plays are latin pieces in the stage band. In this picture, he is trying out some new trumpets and mouthpieces. He found the Temby professional rose brass trumpet the easiest to play. He said 'this trumpet sounds much fuller and is easier to play much louder and tongue faster, the valves don't stick and are much faster'. He now plays his new Temby trumpet with his new Marcinkiewicz Manny Klein mouthpiece and now achieves a bigger sound, more control, easier high notes and more focus. His favourite food is light chocolate with caramel. David Temby heard Harrison's playing and was amazed with his his high level of playing at such an early age. Harrison's family have been part of The Music Place family for a number of years and his mum says how thrilled her family have been with being looked after by the staff over the years.
