The Warburton system lets you choose a combination of rim diameter, cup style and depth, with a backbore to best balance your sound and resistance. This flexibility means you can have the most efficient mouthpiece with which to perform in any given playing situation. Our two-piece system consists of fully interchangeable "TOP" sections and "BACKBORE" sections. Due to the many demands placed upon the modern brass player, the variety of Warburton cup designs are able to produce the most desired sound in any playing idiom.

KT Backbore - Added to the line in mid 1987, this backbore appeals to commercial/lead players and is characterized by its projection and secure slotting of notes above high C. The comparative resistance falls in the 4, 5, 6 series. Great for latin and commercial playing!

KT* Backbore - With all the characteristics of the above, the KT* is modified in the venturi to offer a little more open blow, which allows for a more Broadway-style lead trumpet sound!

Q Backbore - New in 2004, the Q is our most aggressive backbore, preferred by lead players who also need to maintain dominance in the middle register without spreading or over-loosening their chops.

Qm Backbore - New in 2008, the Qm is a slight modification to the Q backbore. A modified taper in the venturi section slightly compresses the air column to increase velocity before releasing the air into the main body of the backbore. The result - An exciting commercial sound with an intense center.

NY Backbore - This backbore was inspired by the sound of the old Giardinelli #3 (default) backbore made popular by Maynard and others in the '70's. The New York sound was broad, bright, and acoustically loud - which are also the qualities of this backbore. Resistance is just a bit tighter than our #5.

H Backbore - The "H" backbore fits squarely into the commercial category as it seems to perform best with a fast moving airstream associated with shallow cups. Featuring a longer blank with reverse taper in the venturi, the "H" is preferred by strong lead players who are able to convert the high resistance into an efficient and focused buzz. The benefit is that the "H" projects the full spectrum of their sound rather than just making the highs more piercing.

J29 Backbore - The J29's reverse-taper "hourglass" design produces an intensely focused sound. It prints exceptionally well on the mic in live performances and in the studio. The bore is 27 at the interface to match a standard top, but shrinks to #29 at the "waist." High PSI is required for this backbore.

TJ Backbore - For the commercial-style player who is used to putting more air through the horn, the new TJ backbore is the perfect balance of power and support! Played by the lead trumpet for Marc Anthony, and other professional players, we're getting great feedback.

PT Backbore - With the introduction of a new reamer design, this backbore helps to create the old-style Symphonic Trumpet sound that can project over the orchestra without becoming too bright or strident. Resistance falls between the 8 & 9 backbores. The scope of the PT backbore is not as wide as the Warburton star series, which may pay off at the end of long passages.

We offer three styles of trumpet backbores:

Our standard shank series is designated as "C" and is only stamped with the model number or letter. Most players will be most comfortable with the "Standard Series"

The "B" Series - They are exactly like the STANDARD and STAR series internally. The only difference is in the external dimension which is slightly larger and causes a subsequent increase in the GAP. This added diameter can re-establish a functional gap distance in trumpets with worn receivers and where the mouthpiece receiver has been soldered to the lead pipe improperly.

The "D" Series - They are exactly like the STANDARD and STAR series internally. The only difference is in the external dimension which is slightly smaller and causes a subsequent decrease in the GAP. This smaller diameter can create a more functional gap distance for players who feel like their horn plays stuffy, or who need a little more flexibility in the slotting.

While we recommend the use of our STANDARD series for most situations, if there is a noticeable problem with "LOCKING-IN" of the upper partials, the "B" backbore will very often rectify the problem.
