The pixie mute is the traditional, orthodox way to produce the wah-wah sound that jazz audiences learned to love in the 30s and 40s. It is used together with a rubber plunger or other cover to produce a crying sound.
It does just what a pixie mute is supposed to do, it generates a sound with rich harmonic content that you can then sweep with your plunger or other cover. Sitting entirely within the bell without protruding is how it must fit, or it will prevent the plunger from covering the bell.
